NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR CONTROL OF BLINDNESS

 

Ever since the dawn of civilization, society has been confronted with the problem of the blind.  In recent decades, medical advance have helped to reduce blindness due to infectious diseases.  The urgency of alleviating the distress of the blind has been repeatedly stressed by WHO.  Of the total estimated 30 million blind persons (VA< 3/60) in the world, 6 million are in India.  So, one out of every 5 blind persons is an Indian.

The Programme seeks to provide comprehensive eye care to the rural and urban people through eye camps and posting of Ophthalmic Assistants in the rural health institutions and intensification of eye health education measures.
